12 Most Dangerous Cars Ever Made In The U.S.A.

Take a look around and you’ll find a Ford or Chevrolet on most “best cars” lists; Kelley Blue Book even ranked an American car their “most awarded.” (It’s a Jeep.) But things haven’t always been rosy for the great American carmakers. From the chaotic early days of the horseless carriage to mysteriously exploding coupes, several American cars break into the ranks of the most dangerous ever made. This list is a survey of a variety of eras, which means there are different statistics contributing. Sometimes it’s deaths per a certain number of car purchases; sometimes it’s number of accidents; sometimes there are no available statistics but there’s just no freaking way this lunatic vehicle wasn’t insanely deadly.
Despite being one of the few cars to be branded with three separate makes, the Neon—a small, light, chintzy 1990s and 2000s car—was a disaster from a safety perspective. Here’s a quote from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in 2005: “The Neon has ‘major problems beginning with its structure. This car is a disaster,’ Lund says. ‘The structure is poor, and both dummies’ heads were hit by the barrier during the crash test. High forces were recorded on the head, torso, and pelvis of the driver dummy. If this had been a real driver in a real crash, it’s likely it wouldn’t have been survivable.’” It was also found to be responsible for among the highest number of deaths per million vehicles of any car in its class.
