When you’re out for the night, on a camping trip, or just far from an electrical outlet, the best portable phone charger keeps your phone, tablet, and other compatible devices up and running. These handy devices fit in a briefcase, purse, backpack, or pocket to go wherever you go. Some people use them as an emergency preparedness tool, and others take them on vacation or outdoor adventures to keep devices charged.

There are some features to keep in mind before making a purchase. For example, the charger’s capacity, ports, and charging times should complement and accommodate your devices and needs. With differing priorities in mind, we’ve picked the best portable phone chargers and have included a few tips to help you choose the right one for you.

How We Selected These Products

Portable phone chargers easily become something you take everywhere as a precaution. With that in mind, we methodically researched the different options on the market, looking for a combination of capacity, versatile ports, and size.

  • Capacity: We looked for portable phone chargers with a capacity between 4,500mAh and 20,000mAh. There are circumstances in which you might want more capacity, such as a product designed to charge multiple devices.
  • Versatile Ports: We considered how many ports and what type of ports the charger has. Those with both a USB-A and USB-C port are more versatile. Models with multiple ports of either type also allow users to charge multiple devices.
  • Size: These chargers are meant to be portable. For that reason, we factored in the size and weight and how they complemented the charger’s specific purpose. For example, a model designed to charge multiple devices will be bigger and heavier than a mini portable phone charger meant to give your phone a quick boost.

The Best Portable Phone Chargers: Reviews & Recommendations

Best Overall: INIU Portable Charger

Best Overall

Compact and portable, the INIU has the capacity to charge several devices. INIU

Why It Made The Cut: The INIU has the capacity for several charges and has double USB-A output ports plus a USB-C port, making it the most robust portable phone charger overall.

  • Weight: 6.88 ounces
  • Product Dimensions: 5.19 x 2.75 x .6 inches
  • Capacity: 10,000mAh

  • Holds two to three phone charges
  • Can charge up to three devices at once
  • Includes a USB-C port
  • Built-in flashlight

  • Does not include an adaptor

The INIU Portable Charter offers premium performance and features while remaining relatively lightweight and affordable. It can charge up to three devices at once, each on one of the two USB-A ports and the single USB-C port. The versatile charging options work well for households with a wide range of devices.

The 10,000mAh has enough power for two or three full cell phone charges, depending on the make and model of the phone. Despite its capacity, it weighs only 6.88 ounces, making it lighter and more portable than some of the bulkier models. The INIU also includes a flashlight for emergency use.

However, it only comes with a cord for charging. You can plug it into a laptop to charge or buy an adaptor separately.

Best Solar Charger: BLAVOR Solar Power Bank

Best Solar Charger

The BLAVOR’s solar panel keeps a small charge going and offers wireless or wired charging options. BLAVOR

Why It Made The Cut: It may be somewhat bulky, but the BLAVOR’s wireless charging, built-in flashlight, and bright dual flashlights make it the best portable solar charger.

  • Weight: 10 ounces
  • Product Dimensions: 5.91 x 3.07 x .87 inches
  • Capacity: 10,000mAh

  • Wireless charging option
  • USB-A and USB-C ports (output)
  • Reinforced rubber edge design
  • IPX4 water resistance

  • Solar power is only the backup charge

The BLAVOR Solar Power Bank is a great charger for outdoor adventurers who frequently camp, hike, or canoe. It’s IPX4 rated for water resistance, so it can handle rain without damage (but not submersion). It’s also versatile in the charging department, with wireless (QI), USB-A, and USB-C charging options.

This model offers 10,000mAh. But it’s important to understand how the solar charge works. Solar power isn’t the primary power source. It’s fully charged with a cord, then the solar panel acts as a backup source, so don’t expect the solar cells to fully charge your device on its own. It extends the charging capabilities until you can fully charge the unit or your device with electricity.

Consequently, the BLAVOR works well for day-long trips or extended camping and hiking trips.

Best Mini Charger: iWalk Ultra-Compact Power Bank

Best Mini Charger

This tiny power pack offers 4,500mAh, comes in five colors, and fits in your pocket. iWALK

Why It Made The Cut: The iWalk doesn’t need a cable to charge devices and boasts a small footprint, making it the best mini portable phone charger.

  • Weight: 3.8 ounces
  • Product Dimensions: 4.53 x 4.49 x 1.54 inches
  • Capacity: 4,500mAh

  • Small, portable size and light weight
  • Built-in connector with protective cap
  • Comes in five colors

  • Only works with iPhones
  • Low capacity

The iWalk Ultra-Compact Power Bank’s unique design plugs directly into many iPhone models, from the iPhone 5 to the iPhone 13. Its tiny size and light weight make it ultra-portable. You can drop it in a pocket or store it in a purse or backpack with ease. The built-in connector has a protective cap for when it’s not in use. This little charger also offers style options, coming in five colors.

However, the iWalk isn’t for everyone. It only charges iPhones and only has 4,500mAh. That won’t give your phone a full charge, but it’s enough to keep it from going dead in a pinch.

Best for Multiple Phones: Anker PowerCore 26800 Portable Charger

Best for Multiple Phones

The PowerCore 26800 can charge multiple devices to full capacity with juice left over for more. Anker

Why It Made The Cut: With its high capacity that makes it capable of quickly charging three devices at once, the PowerCore 26800 won’t leave you waiting.

  • Weight: 17.28 ounces
  • Product Dimensions: 7 x 3.1 x .9 ounces
  • Capacity: 28,600mAh

  • Quickly charges devices
  • Charges three devices at once
  • Dual input ports for faster recharging

  • No USB-C charging
  • Heavy

The Anker PowerCore 26800 Portable Charger packs a lot of power into a fairly sizable charger. However, it’s still portable and holds an impressive 26,800mAh, giving it the power to charge up to three devices at once with its three USB-A ports. Granted, the more devices it charges at once, the longer it takes for each device to fully charge.

The high capacity does mean that the PowerCore 26800 takes longer to reach its full capacity again. However, to get around that problem, it has dual inputs, putting the usual charging time between six to eight hours.

This model is the biggest one on our list, weighing just over 1 pound — meaning you probably won’t want to tote it along on a backpacking trip or night out. It also can’t charge USB-C devices, despite all of the ports.

Best Budget Charger: EnergyCell Slim 2

Best Budget Charger

The EnergyCell Slim 2 provides pocket-sized power that saves a few dollars. EnergyCell

Why It Made The Cut: With an affordable price and quick charging capacity that fits right in your pocket, the EnergyCell charger is the best budget charger.

  • Weight: 3.4 ounces
  • Product Dimensions: 3.9 x 1.3 x 1.2 inches
  • Capacity: 4,000mAh

  • Lightweight and highly portable
  • Good capacity for the size
  • Five color options

  • May not fully charge some devices

With a 5,000mAh capacity, the highly affordable, pocket-size EnergyCell Slim 2 provides enough juice for a single charge for most cell phones. Because it falls into the mini category — weighing just 3.4 ounces — it’s much smaller and lighter than the average portable charger. Plus, its tube shape lets it easily slip inside your pocket.  It also comes in five colors, making it a stylish and practical choice.

Keep in mind that the Slim 2 may not have the capacity to fully charge larger devices. While it will provide a power boost, it will not take them from 0 percent to 100 percent.

Things to Consider When Buying the Best Portable Phone Charger

Size and Weight

Portable chargers get less portable the larger and heavier they are. Models under 10 ounces balance capacity with weight, and they’re typically a size that’s easy to carry with you. However, if you want a model that can charge several devices at once or hold enough power for several charges, your ideal charger will be bigger and heavier.

Mini chargers typically have a 5,000mAh capacity or less and weigh less than 5 ounces. These models are the most portable but may only hold enough power to give a single device a power boost or fully charge a single device.

Capacity tells you how much power the charger holds. It’s measured in mAh and ranges from 4,000mAh to 35,000mAh. The more capacity the battery has, the more devices it can charge, but again, that means it will be bigger and weigh more. You’ll have to decide where the sweet spot is for you between capacity and size.

Do you want a charger that gives a small power boost and doesn’t take up space? Or do you want one that can charge a couple of phones and a tablet on a single charge? Or something in between?

For a single cell phone charge, a 4,000 to 5,000mAh portable charger will do. However, if you want more than a single charge, you’ll need to upgrade to a 10,000mAh charger. Models with 20,000 to 30,000mAh give you even more use options, but they’re heftier.

Input/Output Port Types and Number

The input ports determine how you recharge the portable charger. Most come with a compatible charging cord, but you may need to purchase an extra adaptor separately. Larger chargers may have multiple input ports for faster recharging.

The output ports are where you plug in the device to be charged by the charger. Most portable chargers have at least one USB-A or USB-C port. USB-C ports are now more common for their faster charging. If you have a mix of older and newer devices, you may need a portable phone charger that has both port types.

Watch out. Some chargers have a USB-C port for their own recharging but not for charging other devices. Check to make sure it has the needed input/output ports.

Q: Can portable chargers damage your phone?

Portable chargers will not damage your phone. However, be wary of cheap models. Poor-quality components and construction may cause the charger to malfunction, which could damage your devices.

Q: How long do portable phone chargers last?

Portable chargers have a finite life span. Over time, their batteries will eventually lose the ability to hold a charge. You can expect 1.5 to 3.5 years before needing to replace a portable phone charger.

Q: What is a good size portable charger?

For most people, 5,000mAh to 20,000mAh is enough. Smaller capacities will work for phones, earbuds, and e-readers, while large capacities can charge tablets and multiple devices at once.

Final Thoughts

The INIU Portable Charter provides fast charging in a lightweight package at a price that’s hard to beat, even though it’s not a budget model. If you’re on a tight budget, the EnergyCell Slim 2 can keep your phone going and won’t take up space. Just make sure you get the ports you need, and you’re sure to find a charger that keeps your devices powered.
