Three Things to Consider Before Buying an Apple Watch Band

Customize your watch with a strap to suit your style.

With just a quick press and slide, you can easily switch out your Apple Watch’s band, so why not coordinate your watch with your outfit for the day? Additional bands are an inexpensive way of changing things up, with thousands of options available, whether your look is classic, kitsch, sporty or sophisticated.

Before you click the “buy” button, check that you’ve ordered the right size band for your watch. The first three editions of the Apple Watch were available in two sizes, 38mm and 42mm, while later editions were 40mm and 44mm. But the later models were designed so that a 38mm strap would fit a 40mm watch and a 42mm strap would fit the 44mm watch, so if you’ve got bands from an old watch, you should still be able to use them on the newer ones.

As well as checking you’ve got the sizing of your band right, you might also want to check that you’ve chosen the right colour pins as with some bands, these will be visible next to the watch face. With watch bodies now available in black, silver, gold and rose gold, that’s another choice to make — do you go for a metal that coordinates with your watch face or one that contrasts? There is no right or wrong, it’s all down to personal taste.

Familiarize yourself with the different types of strap and their fastenings. If you’re going sporty, the options are a Sport Band with a pin and hole fastening, or the Sport Loop, which wraps around using a Velcro-style closure. For a more sophisticated look, opt for a Classic Buckle, a Modern Buckle that uses magnets to close, or a Milanese Loop, which works in a similar way to the Sport Loop but is made from metal and is held in place by another magnetic closure.
