Working at home, as ideal as it might sound to some, comes with a set of challenges. For one, if you’re seriously space-deprived, where do you set up? A folding desk might be the solution to that particular problem. You can get one that folds up and fits in a closet when it’s not in use, or you can get a more permanent wall-mounted desk that folds up into the wall when you don’t need it.
Since folding chairs come in varying heights, a folding desk is best accompanied by an adjustable chair. It should allow your arms to bend 90 degrees at the elbows and your wrists to be straight while typing on the computer.
If you’d prefer a solid-wood work surface instead of metal, elm, maple, cedar and rosewood are all good options, as are less-expensive manufactured alternatives like plywood, MDF, MDO and particleboard. Beware of spills with MDF and particleboard, which aren’t waterproof on their own, while MDF is less stiff than plywood and can be prone to sagging.
One of the great things about a wall-mounted folding desk is that you can set it up so that it’s right underneath wall-mounted shelves for storing necessary items like books and other work tools. Some models come with storage pouches that you can attach and detach as needed.
