Three Things to Consider Before Buying a Baby Gate

Keep your baby’s confined to a safe area with a reliable baby gate.

A proud parent moment is when their kid starts crawling, and even more so when he or she starts walking. However, this newfound mobility means it is easier for young ones to get around and get into trouble, or unsafe situations. Things are all of a sudden much more accessible to your child, and you can’t kid-proof your entire home. Thankfully, with the help of a gate, you can prevent your little one from wandering into areas you don’t want them in. Here are some notes to ponder as you shop.

Baby gates work best in specific parts of the home. Some work in hallways to block babies from entering specific rooms, while others keep babies clear of a stairway. Chances are good those two things would require completely different baby gates. Some baby gates are built with pressure mounds that work best in doorways and similar spots.

The design of your baby gate takes into consideration style, but also the safety and function. If you get a baby gate with too wide of holes, then your baby will have no problem squeezing through those holes and getting into danger. Ideally, you don’t want the gate to have any spaces more than 3-inches wide, and you should stay away from the accordion-like gates that have diamond-shaped spaces.

Look for a baby gate that is at least 22 inches high or taller so you can use it safely as your baby grows. However, note that baby gates should not be used for kids past age two. At that age, children are able to find ways to get out of the gate, which is not what you want. You may even want to consider a baby gate that doubles as a playpen for your little one to safely hang out in when you have your hands busy with other things.
