So, you want to get a smartwatch. You might think that your options are limited to certain manufacturers that charge an arm and a leg, but that’s not true. If you use an iPhone, there are a lot of smartwatches out there that are iOS compatible (and Android compatible, too) that can do everything you want from displaying phone notifications to tracking your health data, and they do it cheaper than you’d think. But of course, not all of them are the same. There’s a huge variation when it comes to screen quality, metrics, durability, and other features. Here are a few things to keep in mind along those lines as you shop.

What’s the point of a watch if you can’t read it? Having a good display is absolutely clutch. Look for a decent size (at least 1.5-inches wide), but also pay attention to the brightness and colors. Screen technology varies out there. An OLED or AMOLED watch face typically uses less battery, has deep, rich blacks, and colors that really pop.

Just about any smartwatch will track how many steps you take, but if you want a more holistic look at your health, look for a model that monitors your heart rate 24 hours a day. That, combined with your vitals, will give you a much more accurate estimate of your caloric burn and daily activity levels. Some smartwatches have GPS, too, which is nice for runs or bike rides when you want to leave you phone behind.

Your watch isn’t very useful if it breaks. At the minimum, if you think you might accidentally wear a watch into the shower, a waterproof model is a must. Watches that are swim-proof are even better, as they give you yet another way to exercise. You also want to look at battery life. Generally, you want a fully-charged device to remain powered for about a week before needing to be rejuvenated so you don’t have to take it off and plug it in every night.
