Three Things to Consider Before Buying a Sun Hat
Sun hats are more than a fashion piece and can help protect your skin from damaging sun rays.
As much as everyone loves the sun, it is no secret that it can do some damage to your body. So, if you are planning to spend some time in the sun, it’s important that you wear sunscreen, but also that you get a sun hat. A sun hat helps protect you from the sun but also helps to keep your head stay cool when it gets hot outside. Oh yeah, and it also gives you some fashion points. Here’s how to select one that looks good and does its job.
When shopping for a sun hat, you want one that is breathable. It is vital that your head is able to still get air with the hat on your head, and that it doesn’t suffocate under the heat. It is even better if the material you choose is one that offers UPF protection. Look for one that is UPF50 or above to get the highest levels of protection for your body. The materials that will give you these things are usually straw, cotton, nylon and polyester.
You don’t need to go crazy with the brim size on your sun hat, but you do want one that will cover your ears and your neck. This means the brim should measure at least 3 inches. If you want to go with a bigger one, great! You can take it off briefly if it gets in the way. There is also the decision between a stiff brim and a floppy brim. Stiff brims are better when things such as the wind enter the picture, but they are more difficult to pack.
The color of your sun hat has more meaning to it than fashion. White and other bright, light colors help reflect the heat from the sun while a dark hat will absorb the heat. This means that when wearing a black hat, you will feel much hotter than a light hat. Another thing to pay attention to is the color of the brim’s underside as well. If this area is dark, that means it absorbs the UV rays and helps them stay off of your face.
