Three Things to Consider Before Buying a Smart Plug

Adding smart plugs can turn old appliances into automated, smart devices.

Say you’ve got a beautiful, antique lamp from your grandpa. You’d never throw it away, but wouldn’t it be nice if you could control it remotely, or even through your voice? Or what if it could fit into a whole lighting setup in a room and be adjusted with a quick swipe on an app? That’s the power of a smart plug. You just plug these small devices into your standard outlet, attach your gadget to it, and you’re on your way to the smart home of your dreams, without having to redecorate at all. But there are a lot of things to factor in when looking for the right smart plug.

A good smart plug has a Wi-Fi antenna built right into it. This means that it won’t need a special “hub” for you to control it with your phone. They should be able to recognize each other on your home network, and through an app on your phone, you should be able to control them. Of course, there are other ways of controlling them, too.

Nothing says “smart” like understanding you when you speak. Good smart plugs will work with digital voice assistants like Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple’s Siri, among others. That means you’ll be able to call out to turn your lights on, and you won’t have to fumble in the dark for your phone to turn a fan off when you get chilly in the middle of the night.

One of the best things about smart plugs is that you can set them up to do what you want them to do without you even having to ask them. That could mean turning lights on and off when you’re on vacation. Or it could be turning on the humidifier in your bedroom an hour before you go to sleep each night. Ideally, you can group your plugs together, so entire rooms can have unique, automatic habits.
