Origami is an art of folding paper that dates back to centuries and is most closely associated with Japanese culture. The goal is to create a figurine (the crane is a classic origami effigy) by folding a flat sheet of paper into a three-dimensional shape. There are many different ways to accomplish this task, which can be frustrating if you’re learning the techniques. To help, here are a few essentials you’ll need to get crafting.

Folding origami figures begins with selecting the right paper. There are three types to choose from: Lokta, Kozo, and Momi. All three incorporate long plant (not wood) fibers to give the paper greater strength, depth, and texture that’s not achievable with machine-made papers. The result is sheets that hold creased lines without tearing or feathering.

Any flat surface will do for folding origami figures, but a craft station works best and can also double as a work desk for your computer and office supplies. Standard desk height is 29 inches, though adjustable legs will let you adjust accordingly if you’re tall or short. Drawers for storing craft supplies are always a plus and if you need to stash pens, paper, and other essentials, consider adding a hutch with cubbies on top.

One nice thing about origami kits is that they come with all the supplies you need—paper, patterns, and even colored paper variations with eyes or butterfly patterns pre-printed on the paper. Some also include detailed instructions for making all sorts of figures, breaking down each step into easy, more difficult, and extremely challenging designs, so you can create more intricate masterpieces as your skill level improves.
